Protecting our most valuable event in Indiana By: Jim Gandolf

I have spent many years writing about how much I love the Indianapolis 500 mile race. I never thought about this until I was walking over to the most famous race track, with my nephew, and my son a few years ago to the race track for time trials. A ticket scalper was in our way and tried to sell me race tickets. I told the ticket scalper, “I already had race tickets.” Then I look at the tickets that this man had in his hand. I noticed that the tickets in this ticket scalpers hand, and were the ink on the ticket was smirked and messy. The ticket just didn't look right. I started to get so mad I wanted to clobber the ticket scalper. I had both of these young boys with me, and I didn't want to make a seen.  I had to say something to this guy after seeing those bad tickets, so I said, “What in the world are you doing with those fake tickets?”  This ticket scalper was so mad at me I thought that this guy was going to fight me?  Then the rage set in my world of madness.  I was so upset that I couldn't see straight. How could this happen to my world of love for the Indianapolis 500 Mile race? I just walked over to a police officer that was directing traffic, and just said, “Hello; and brought his attention to this fake ticket drama that I just witnessed with my two best little friends!” The police officer was so mad as well, then the police officer looked at the ticket scalper and started to call on his radio some sort of code. The ticket scalper took off running! I started to think of the sadness of someone ripping off the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I then only could do what I know how to do; I explained to my son and nephew , to only by tickets to the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and never off of anyone else at all. I had a long talk with these two great children, which last night at dinner, my son brought that ordeal many years ago up to me. He said that he was going to do odd jobs  all winter to buy him and me a ticket to the race this next year, and he wants me to go with him to the ticket office to make the purchase. My son is 14 years old now, and that hit my heart with so much love, I just can’t put that down in words. I told my son, “I got you covered young man, because we are going to try to get a great guy in that race next year, with the Lords help, and a few good friends.” Then my son smiled at me and said, “Dad; I am with you either it’s with popcorn on the couch or at that race track, because that’s our time together!”  That is what that race track is about; family time together in all means of family activity.  The seriousness  fake tickets is a tragedy, I was so distorted about the fake tickets that I went on a mission to learn more about how I could expose these nightmare scammers of trying to capitalize on this fake ticket action. I learned that people have been making fake silver and bronze badges as well? How in the world do you know if you have a real event ticket over at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway?  This is real simple my friends, you just buy the event ticket from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ticket office.  The Indianapolis Motor Speedway will make you happy with the real situation and real proper credentials for the best racing experience. You can find a list of all the ticket scammers on the BBB web site.

This from a BBB news article.
“Special events provide opportunities for the selling of counterfeit tickets,” says Tom Bozikis, Vice President of Policy and Standards at the Tri-State BBB, “so be careful with your purchase.”

To insure you end up with authentic tickets and a safe transaction, the BBB has a few tips below to consider:

If a “Good Deal” seems too good to be true…..question it!  Great seats and high demand tickets for popular events are expensive for a reason. They are truly hard to get!  If you are offered a deal that is much less than offered elsewhere, question it.
Do your Research.  Check out the ticket distributor with your BBB then review the company’s policies for customer satisfaction.  Also check out your tickets.  If buying online, ask to see a picture of the tickets to confirm the seats match with the venue and research how the tickets should look, to confirm your tickets are a match.
Be careful how you pay.  Wiring money for any transaction is a non-traceable form of payment, so if you don’t receive tickets, it will be very hard to follow up. Most reputable businesses offer the option to pay by credit card or Paypal, which often provides a safer method with dispute resolution services.
Buying from a scalper is like a game of roulette.  The tickets could be exactly as promised or a waste of time and money. If you want guaranteed seats to an event, it’s best to work with a reputable source. Also keep in mind, that in some states, it is illegal to charge more than the face value for tickets.
